Hemorrhoids are a very common and troublesome disorder. They may mask a more serious diagnosis, such as colon or rectal cancer. Therefore, hemorrhoids require proper diagnosis and treatment by your physician.
Hemorrhoids are dilated (enlarged) veins which occur in and around the anus and rectum. They may be external (outside the anus) or internal, and slip to the outside. Hemorrhoids may also remain inside the rectum and these are called internal hemorrhoids.
At Premier Medical Group, our physicians can provide various treatments for hemorrhoids, depending on their location and severity. The following procedures can be done at our Poughkeepsie office.
- Ligation – used for your internal hemorrhoids, using rubber bands to tie off the base of the swollen vein. The blood circulation ceases and the hemorrhoid then falls off.
- Infrared Coagulation (IRC) – a small probe is placed above the hemorrhoid and bursts of infrared light are applied. The infrared light coagulates the vessels that provide the hemorrhoid with blood, causing the hemorrhoid to shrink and recede.
